Türkiye vs Australia: Socceroos Stun the Crescent Stars in Vancouver

Türkiye 0–2 Australia | Group D | BC Place, Vancouver

Australia put in a composed and clinical performance to defeat Türkiye 2-0 in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group D opener on June 13.

The Socceroos controlled the tempo from the first whistle, pressing high and denying Türkiye any rhythm in the final third. Türkiye's attacking threats were effectively neutralised, with the Australian defensive unit standing firm throughout.

Australia's goals came from well-worked team moves, with their clinical finishing proving the difference between two evenly-matched sides on paper.

For Türkiye, it was a disappointing start to what many had hoped would be a deep tournament run. They will need a significant response in their next two group games to stay alive in the competition.

Australia, meanwhile, sit level on points with the USA at the top of Group D after the opening round of fixtures, setting up a mouth-watering clash between the two sides on June 19 in Dallas.

Group D standings after Matchday 1: USA 3pts, Australia 3pts, Türkiye 0pts, Paraguay 0pts.
