The Istanbul Derby: Beşiktaş vs Fenerbahçe

The rivalry between Beşiktaş and Fenerbahçe is one of the three great Istanbul derbies. While it may not carry the intercontinental branding of the Fenerbahçe–Galatasaray fixture, it is no less passionate — a clash between two clubs with deep roots in the city, distinct identities, and loyal, vocal fanbases.

Two Sides of the City

Beşiktaş is the oldest of Istanbul's big three, founded in 1903. Based in the Beşiktaş district on the European shore of the Bosphorus, the club is closely tied to its neighbourhood and is often seen as the people's club of central Istanbul. Their home, Vodafone Park, sits right on the waterfront.

Fenerbahçe, founded in 1907, represents the Asian side of the city, based in Kadiköy. The two districts are separated by the water but connected by ferries, bridges, and a shared footballing obsession.

The Rivalry

The fixture is defined by:

• Neighbourhood pride: Beşiktaş fans see their club as the authentic heart of old Istanbul; Fenerbahçe fans point to their larger trophy cabinet and continental reach.
• Style: Historically, Beşiktaş have been associated with a gritty, passionate style, while Fenerbahçe have often been viewed as the more polished, star-studded side.
• Atmosphere: Both grounds are among the most intimidating in Turkey, and away trips between the two are famously intense.

Memorable Encounters

• Beşiktaş's 3-2 win in 2009, decided by a late Bobo goal.
• Fenerbahçe's 4-1 victory in 2016 that effectively ended a title race.
• The dramatic 3-3 draw in 2018, featuring a stunning late equaliser.

More Than a Game

The Beşiktaş–Fenerbahçe derby is a celebration of Istanbul's diversity — two clubs from different shores, different traditions, and different dreams, coming together to fight for the city's pride.
